If L.J. DeZarn truly feels that marriage is “a union ordained by God, and not governments,” (”Don’t like Prop. 8? Feel free to move,” Oct 26 letter), then I suppose there would be no issue with removing all government benefits associated with marriage. For example, wrongful death benefits, hospital visitation rights, inheritance, and tax status are just a few of the over 400 state and 1,000 federal benefits that can all be removed from marriage so it is purely a religious institution.
Once that’s accomplished, I’m sure we can then go about banning marriage for atheists and agnostics as their marriage is about love and commitment, and we certainly don’t want that taught in our schools, now do we?
