Mayor Jerry Sanders joined more than 6,000 San Diegans Saturday night in a rally against Proposition 8, which would ban gay marriages in California.
The candlelight vigil and protest rally began Saturday night in Hillcrest, as Mayor Sanders addressed the crowd with his daughter Lisa. Attendees cheered the mayor and held up signs in the streets of Hillcrest to spread their message.
Last year, Mayor Sanders voiced his opposition to the proposition, stating that he was the proud father of a gay daughter.
While supporters of the proposition see it as a protection of marriage, many others see it as a denial of equality and civil rights.
