Marriage is about making a real commitment to love and respect between two people. I certainly don’t want to be in the position of denying my fellow citizens rights that I enjoy. Our state Supreme Court has already ruled that this is unconstitutional.
I’m also disgusted by Tom McClintock’s recent comments comparing California’s same-sex couples, many of whom have been together for decades, to dogs. If we vote according to our American belief in equal rights for all citizens, McClintock, and other voices of intolerance behind Prop. 8, will be soundly defeated on Election Day.
State Superintendent Jack O’Connell, State Board of Education President Ted Mitchell, former State Superintendent of Public Instruction Delaine Eastin and former State Education Board President, Reed Hastings, have joined the growing number of educators to speak out against the deceptive ads supporting Prop. 8.
“The Yes on 8 ads are alarming and irresponsible,” O’Connell said. “Our public schools are not required to teach about marriage. In fact, curriculum involving health issues is chosen by local school governing boards. No matter how you feel about marriage, we can all agree discrimination is wrong. That’s why I’m voting ‘no’ on 8.”
